Selection Panel
The Council of Ontario Universities established a Selection Panel, to operate at arm’s length from the Council. The Panel was responsible for setting the selection criteria, operating the selection process and making the selection of the institutions for the endowment of the Ontario Research Chairs. The Selection Panel engaged internationally renowned experts in each of the eight subject areas to review the submissions.
The Panel was chaired by David Strangway, former President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation and Past President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia. Panel members included Judith Maxwell, founding President of the Canadian Policy Research Networks; Arthur William May, Past President of Memorial University and former President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council; and Harold Shapiro, President Emeritus of Princeton University and former President of the University of Michigan. Harry Swain, a management consultant and former Deputy Minister of the federal departments of Indian Affairs and Industry, served as Secretary to the Panel.
