2015 Provincial Pre-Budget Submission: Ontario Universities – Helping the Government to Build Ontario Up

This pre-budget submission was written to advocate for Ontario universities in advance of the 2015 provincial budget. It makes three recommendations for the consideration of funding for provincial universities, particularly as the province moves to balance the budget, for the following areas: maintain the quality, accessibility and global respect of Ontario university education; match federal research infrastructure dollars; and enhance the internationalization of Ontario universities.

  1. Universities are major economic drivers. Recent studies indicate that a comprehensive Ontario university has an annual economic impact of $2.6 billion, while a very large university has an estimated annual impact of $16 billion.

90 per cent of first-year university students continue to their second year of Ontario university education and 77 per cent will graduate within seven years – a rate more than 10 percentage points higher than in other provinces and in the US.
